Twitter has added some new search features recently, which brings the keyword search bar to every Twitter page and also shows the most popular trending topics from across the site. These are features that you find on most social networking sites, so why is it such a big deal that Twitter has added them, years after initially launching its microblogging platform?

The potential of Twitter lies in search. As an ever-growing community of short updates, a great deal of this content needs to be better archived and accessed. It’s been difficult to do this from a user standpoint because of the missing or dismal search features.

Twitter has managed to survive so far largely in part because of the third party search engines that have cropped up specifically for Twitter users. Summize, one such third party search application, was eventually acquired by Twitter and soon became the Twitter search page. The problem with this page is that it was separate from the main Twitter site.

A few days ago I posted about a rumour that Apple Was Considering Buying Twitter?. I was reading more about the story today and found out that a day after I posted about it the founders of Twitter were on a morning talk show when Biz Stone (co-founder) confirmed that ‘No. We are not for sale’.

He also added that ‘Twitter is focused on developing new features on its Web site and on remaining independent’.

Although the owners of Twitter have stated that they are not selling Twitter, I don’t see these rumours going away, least not until they come up with some sort of business model to take advantage of their growth in popularity.

3 Services to Help You Back Up Your Twitter AccountAre your tweets precious to you? If so, you might be interested in backing up all of your tweets using a Twitter Backup Service. Something which could prove valuable one day if for some reason your account is suspended or hacked.

In this post I will look at 3 services which will help you back your tweets up. I hope you find them useful :)

Twitter Backup

A good script from Johann Burkard, Twitter Backup is a downloadable tool which backups all of your tweets in XML format.

Tweetake

Tweetake lets you backup your Followers, Friends, Favourites, Tweets, Direct Messages or everything. All you need to do is enter your Twitter username and password and then hit the ‘Get Em’ button.

You may take a little time to download, depending on how active you are on Twitter. I have just under 1,000 tweets and it took a minute or so before it let me choose the download location. The file was 1.3mb in size and was in CSV format so you can view the data easily on a spreadsheet application like Exel.

TweetBackup

TweetBackup is an online service which doesn’t require you to download or install any files. It downloads backups for your account daily. You can export posts in RSS, Text and HTML format but unlike Tweetake, you cannot export friends or follower lists.

The only requirement they have is that you need to follow @tweetbackup. If you don’t your account will be deleted (their words, not mine!).

Overview

I’m not sure how necessary it is to back up your tweets but if Twitter is important to your business it might be prudent to backup occasionally. I thought Tweetake was the most pracitcal as it lets you download tweets, friends, followers, messages and more. With it’s daily online backups, TweetBackup is probably the easiest to use.

Another service I came across was TwitterSafe though it’s been down for maintenence for a week or so now (I will review it once it goes live).

Which backup service do you prefer? :)

As I mentioned in one of my posts last week, as soon I registered this domain some spammer registered most variations of this domain name. No doubt they were using software to register accounts with the latest domain names registered in the hope of brokering a sale at a later date (damn hijackers!).

Which is the main reason why I didn’t setup a Twitter account for this blog until today. Thankfully I did find a decent username for this blog so you can all now follow Time To Tweet on Twitter at @Time_To_Tweet.

Please follow @Time_To_Tweet if you want a tweet about the latest posts here. I may use the account for some competitions in the future but for the time being, it will serve mainly as a newsbot to let you know when a new article is online.

Thanks for listening :)

TweetbeepGoogle Alerts is a very useful site which a lot of webmasters use to track references to their websites, products or themselves. TweetBeep is the Twitter equivalent.

It emails you with hourly or daily updates with any reference to a specific keyword you are tracking. You can make your keyword alert as general or as specific as you want. You can choose whether a specific person references a keyword, whether there is a link included and even exclude alerts if a certain keyword is included in the tweet.

It’s a great service for tracking a product or website you are running and one which I’m sure a lot of you will find useful :)

Owen Thomas wrote an article on Gawker today asking ‘Could Apple Buy Twitter?‘. I’m not sure what his sources are but he claims that is the closest company to secure a deal to aquire Twitter, and for a whopping $700 million.

Not sure why Apple would be interested in purchasing Twitter. They are not a search engine company, they are not an ad company, they are a hardware company. Though if these Twitter purchase rumours are true, perhaps they are looking to branch into other areas on the net.

I’m a bit skeptical as to whether there is any truth is this news story. There’s a good chance it’s just another internet rumour which has grown arm and legs :)
